We (the authors) do not get notified of your subscription in any way, we cannot see the subscriptions without digging for them on the stats page, AND we have no way to tell who they came from at all because it only shows us a total number.
But, if you're specifically looking to tell an author you liked a story. I'm going to add to this to say that there are a lot of great reasons to use a subscription.
